  1. Ovarian Stimulation
  2. Oocyte Retrieval
  3. Insemination/ICSI
  4. Embryo Transfer

Here, in this article we will discuss about one such phrase known as ovarian stimulation which is the first step in the treatment of infertility. This process of infertility is carried on a woman to achieve a successful pregnancy at the end of whole infertility treatment.

How does ovarian stimulation work?

In a natural ovulatory cycle, natural hormonal changes drive the process of maturation and release of the egg from the ovary to the uterus. In few patients, this process does not occur naturally so in order to release an egg artificially, ovarian stimulation is done by giving some medications to drive this process and make ovulatory cycle function properly and develop good quality oocytes.

Types of Ovarian Stimulation:

  1. Long Protocol
  2. In this protocol, process of ovarian stimulation is started a week before the expected date of the next menstrual cycle.
  3. Antagonist Protocol
  4. In this protocol, process of ovarian stimulation is started from the second day of the menstrual cycle.

Several hormones are administered to the patient to develop high quality oocytes which can be retrieved at a single egg retrieval procedure.

Ovarian stimulation is achieved by different hormonal injections such as gonadotropins that contains follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone. These hormones stimulate the growth of the multiple follicles in the ovary. Follicle stimulating hormone injections are given to the patient 10-12 days before the next oocyte retrieval process is scheduled.

Patient is closely monitored upon by an ultrasound machine and constantly the follicle number and sizes are measured and once they grow about 17-18 mm in diameter, then only the egg retrieval procedure is scheduled. A final HCG injection is given to the patient mature the egg in the uterus.
