What is IVF(In-Vitro-Fertilization) and why it is done?
What is IVF?

Date

The first IVF childbirth took place in England in 1978. When this technology was first used, this treatment was limited to the woman who was facing issues of blocked fallopian tubes which stopped the sperm to reach the eggs and on the path back to the uterus for a fertilized egg to return where the embryo grows and gives a form of pregnancy.

IVF(In-Vitro-Fertilization) is a series of scientific techniques of fertilization where a woman’s egg and a man’s sperm are combined outside a human body in a glass(vitro). These processes are used to stimulate the woman’s ovulatory process. Certain medications help the egg to get mature and once they are matured, the ovum(egg) from the woman’s ovaries is taken and combined with sperms to fertilize the egg in the laboratory. Once the egg is fertilized (often known as a zygote), it undergoes embryo culture for 2-5 days, and then it is implanted back into the same woman’s uterus or some other woman’s uterus as required and need of the patient and this final step is taken to get a successful pregnancy. These all processes are planned for 3-4 weeks and these may wary sometimes in some of the IVF cases.

IVF is the most result-oriented assisted reproductive technology apart from ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), cryopreservation of gametes, or use of fertility medication. These processes are used for couples as per their need for conception with minimal complications and giving them successful childbirth scientifically.

This method is used to conceive a child by using scientific methods for couples who are facing infertility issues with their bodies and these issues refrain them from having babies, but IVF is a procedure to overcome infertility issues faced by man or woman or both of them in a couple and help them conceive a child. Successful IVF process depends on many factors from the couple’s age to the rate of infertility they are facing.  IVF has the best results in the age 23-39 and above the age of 39, IVF can be done but the success ratio of successful pregnancy gets low compared to the success ratio of age 23-39.

Some of the infertility reasons for the need for IVF are as follows :

1. Blocked Fallopian tubes

As mentioned earlier, blocked fallopian tubes prevent sperm from entering the egg and preventing the fertilized egg from coming back to the uterus once the egg is fertilized with sperm. IVF technology had been started to overcome this infertility concern.

2. Ovulation Disorders

It is the disorder where ovulation is not frequent or absent in some cases, delivers less fertile eggs into the uterus that combine with sperms for embryo formation.

3. Weakened sperm production

Sperms are less dense or in less concentration, less mobility, and abnormalities in shape and size of sperms are the reason they are not able to fertilize the egg and hence stop the reproduction process.

4. Endometriosis

It occurs when uterine tissue implants and grows outside the uterus due to which this damages uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries in a woman

5. Uterine Fibrosis

These are tumors found on the wall of the uterus which interferes in a plantation on an egg in the uterus. These are mostly found in women aging from 30-40. This hampers the reproduction process and conceiving is not done properly.

6. Tuban Sterilization removal

It is the process of removal or overcoming the scenario were permanently blocked fallopian tubes to prevent pregnancy patients wants to have a child, can have with help of IVF technology.

7. Unidentified Causes

There are cases where couples are not able to conceive although they don’t have or show any above symptoms or issues of infertility.

8. Genetic disorders

These are disorders that have been passed in the next generations by their parents and they need to exactly find the genetic disorders and treat them with necessary medications or treatments and then go for IVF surgery.

These are the most probable infertility reasons faced by a man or woman in a couple due to which couples are not able to conceive and have to go for IVF surgery.
